Singer 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine

My aunt Dahlia calls this one her favorite, and since she has designed some of my best-rated Halloween costumes, I decided this one would be my first pick.

In performance, this machine is a workhorse.

It sews up to 1100 stitches per minute and has 23 built-in stitches to choose from. Among these, 12 are decorative, while the rest are basic and stretch stitches, along with a one-step stitch for buttonhole.

The four types of presser feet given with the Singer 4423 include an all-purpose foot, buttonhole foot, zipper foot, and a button-sewing foot.

I found that the clear view cover of the top-drop bobbin was very user-friendly. Other such features include the automatic needle threader and the Singer Sewing Assistant app.

Other important features that we liked:

  • The metal frame is quite heavy-duty.
  • The bedplate is made of stainless steel.
  • Very strong motor, claiming 60% more strength than others.
  • Up to 6mm stitch width can be achieved.
  • Snap-on presser feet with pressure control.
  • The Singer Sewer Assistant App gives you new tricks and tutorials.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The built-in stitch range might not satisfy an avid designer.

2. Brother CS6000i Feature-Rich Sewing Machine - (Best Computerized Sewing Machine)

Brother CS6000i Feature-Rich Sewing Machine

This was recommended with a twinkle in the eye that said, “Lassie, it’s smarter than you are!”.

And I found that my aunt may be on to something here. It is a computerized sewing machine, and very user-friendly, with some amazing features.

Threading the Brother CS6000i is hassle-free, by following the diagram on the machine itself. Once it reaches the needle, a simple lever push threads the needle.

The machine comes with over 60 built-in stitches, a massive range that is compounded by the fact that you choose it via the machine’s LCD. While you can see the actual stitch on the screen, you can also select the stitch width.

Its extra-large table makes it ideal for heavy-duty stitching, for example, that of quilts.

The machine has a light pointed at the sewing area, and the sewing speed is adjustable as well.

Other important features that we liked:

  • One-step auto-size buttonholes of 7 various styles.
  • Button-operated or pedaled according to the need of the hour.
  • Drop-in bobbin with a jam-resistant set-up.
  • Cuffs and sleeves can be easily customized with the built-in free-arm.
  • The printed diagram on the machine to show where to place the bobbin for winding it.
  • There are 8 varieties of sewing and quilting feet.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The overall sturdiness doesn’t translate into its looks, but we thought it was great for the price.

3. Janome 2212 Sewing Machines - (Best Affordable Sewing Machine)

Janome 2212 Sewing Machines

Now let’s move away from both those brands into something that few find on their own. And the Janome 2212 was a surprising find.

First off, this one is an entry-level, basic sewing machine, for everyday needs. Yep, we need those too, don’t we?

It showcases 12 built-in stitches, with a maximum width of 5mm and length of 4mm.

The stitches are clearly labeled on the machine and selected with a dial. Another dial is provided for adjusting stitch length.

The thick metal feeding plate makes feeding the fabric an easy affair, and for everyday uses, we thought that the Janome can prove ideal.

Other important features we liked:

  • Extra high presser foot lift and snap-on presser feet.
  • Blind stitch, buttonhole, and zipper feet are provided.
  • There is a reverse lever for locking the stitches.
  • The free arm is easy to use.
  • There is a foot control.
  • A vinyl dust cover is provided.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The bobbin is not drop-in.

4. Singer M3500 Sewing Machine - (Best Sewing Machine for Beginners)

Singer M3500 Sewing Machine

Yep, the Singer sewing machines are very popular among my aunts. The M3500 is a strong contender for the top position, and I will tell you why in a second.

The machine has 32 built-in stitches, from basic to decorative to buttonholes. This is a mechanical system, so all you do is turn the wheel at the side, and your next stitch type is ready to load.

With the flip of a lever, you can even stitch in reverse, so that you gather the seam at the beginning and end of each line to stop it from unraveling, much like the Janome machine.

There are more than 85 accessories included with this Singer sewing machine, including 4 types of sewing feet: all-purpose, buttonhole, button sewing, and zipper feet.

Other important features we liked:

  • The needle threader is built-in.
  • One-step buttonhole stitching is provided.
  • Adjustable stitch length for your different uses.
  • Soft machine cover to shield from dust.
  • The heavy-duty metal frame makes the machine quite sturdy.
  • Mechanical operations mean there is no learning curve for most people.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The bobbin is front-loading and not a drop-in.

Brother XR3774 Sewing and Quilting Machine

More photo & price on Amazon.ca

I was looking for more Brother sewing machines because I liked the other model, and found that this one fits the bill as well.

It has 37 built-in stitches: among them are several decorative and usual stitches, and my favorite, a blind hem.

Its one-step buttonholer is worth mentioning too, as is its wider table to stitch your quilt.

I was pretty impressed by how the machine rolls on. There are 8 sewing feet included, like the other Brother model we already saw.

These include a quilting foot, a narrow hemmer, a buttonhole and a button sewing foot each, and sewing feet for the zipper, zigzag and blind stitch.

Other important features that we liked:

  • The needle threader is automatic.
  • The 37 stitches are selected via turning a wheel/dial.
  • The drop-in bobbin setup is very user friendly.
  • Auto-sized buttonholes in one-step stitching.
  • You are provided with an instructional DVD too.
  • Extra accessories are provided.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • This is for a more experienced person, who knows how to handle a mechanical sewing machine.

Singer 1304 Start Basic Everyday Free Arm Sewing Machine

More photo & price on Amazon.ca

Singer 1304 was included because it is perfect for those who want a simple, everyday sewing machine.

There are 6 built-in stitches: the straight, the zigzag, the satin, the blind hem, and the buttonhole. Though there are few, this machine cannot be underestimated.

It has a heavy-duty metal frame, with a removable free arm for reaching cuffs and hems.

It also has two spool pins to be used with twin needle sewing, and the 3 essential presser feet, so that buttonholes and zippers are easily stitched as well.

This is a very, very easy-to-operate machine, with the instructions printed right on top of the machine itself. You would have to try it out to believe it.

Other important features that we liked:

  • The 4-step buttonhole stitching is automatic.
  • You can preset and customize stitch length and width.
  • There is a darning plate included for free-motion sewing.
  • The bobbin winding system is automatic.
  • Up to 750 stitches per minute.
  • There is an LED sewing space light.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The only thing that this pretty little machine lacks is a greater range of stitches, but it is a highly useful machine to have in every household.

7. Brother ST150HDH Sewing Machine - (Easiest-to-use Sewing Machine)

Brother ST150HDH Sewing Machine

More photo & price on Amazon.ca

This one also comes highly recommended for ease of use. It made its way here because of its computerized nature and a great many user-friendly features.

The greatest features of Brother sewing machines usually include the number of built-in stitches. Here, the ST150HDH has 50.

This includes 5 auto-size buttonholes, which I am certain to make your life easier to manage.

You can sew anything with this machine, period. We tested with wool and denim, in multiple layers, and it went through like going through silk.

This is aided by the 7-point box feeders for smooth feeding of the material, proving to us that the company knows how to make the machines right.

Oh, and before I forget, it has a backlit LCD too. This displays your stitch selection and width, while also suggesting what foot to use with it.

All of which makes this, Brother, without a doubt one of the best sewing machines in Canada. It is worth every penny you spend on it.

Other important features that we liked:

  • The touch of a lever gives you automatic needle threading.
  • Clear-view bobbin cover and automatic bobbin winding system.
  • Drop-in bobbin with an anti-jamming system.
  • Cool points for looks and quiet operation.
  • A set of heavy-weight sewing needles and 9 sewing feet come with it.
  • The heavy-duty metal frame increases durability.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • A capacity for lettering would have made this machine a league apart from every other model here, but unfortunately, this one can’t letter automatically.

This one was another recommendation, for those who want a budget sewing machine with some unique stitches. For aspiring fashion designers, this will be a great beginner machine.

Singer MX231 has 23 unique stitches, with the capacity for 97 stitch applications.

The buttonhole stitching is one-step and consistent, while the foot pressure can be regulated for different types of materials.

And the Singer Sewing Assistant App is always ready to help in terms of techniques for stitching and the working of the machine.

Other important features that we liked:

  • Encased in a plastic-like material is the very durable full-body metal frame.
  • Customizable stitch length and width for maximum creativity.
  • Automatic needle threader so that it is done without strain.
  • Basic as well as decorative stitches to let your imagination fly wild.
  • The free arm can be used for the sleeves, cuffs, and hems.
  • Portable and lightweight design.

What we didn’t like as much:

  • The front-loading bobbin is the only drawback that we saw, although it couldn’t be categorized as a huge problem.
