What makes one humidifier better than the other? The overall performance, ease of maintenance and most importantly, its ability to perform under different weather conditions. While all humidifiers are designed to do one core job, many up-to-date models double as an aroma diffuser as well. With tons of lucrative choices in the market, choosing the best humidifier for your specific needs could be intimidating.

We, a group of tech-enthusiast collaborated with a bunch of marketing experts in 2016 to gather information about the top humidifier models available in the market. So far, we have tested over 50 products in various states of Canada over the span of 3 years. This review is based on the reports we gathered from our lab tests in 2019.

TaoTronics TT- AH001 has been our favorite pick for the last 3 consecutive years. In the 3rd year of our experiment, we pitted TaoTronics TT-AH001 against 30 other models and our decision remained unchanged. It is the ultimate humidifier for a number of reasons. The sizeable tank can contain enough water to last for up to 15 hours at Medium mist setting in the harsh cold weather of Canada.

The 360-degree nozzle utility feature allows you to channelize the soothing mist in any direction you want. You can simply pre-set the mist mode manually in order to maintain the ideal humidity level in the room all the time. The square-shaped model’s contemporary design gelled with the low-key decor of our apartment in Montreal where we tested this product.

Another feature that makes it a league of its own is the microporous ceramic cartridge. It filters out microorganisms, magnesium, and calcium ion from the water. Therefore, the cloud of mist released from the device is absolutely safe and pure. Add to that, the operation is virtually whisper-quiet and gets cleaned in a jiffy.

What we liked

  • 1.1-gallon tank capacity that should last for about 15 hours.
  • 360-degree nozzle.
  • Fuss-free maintenance.
  • Silent operation.
  • Microporous ceramic cartridge.

What we didn't like

  • Doesn’t include an oil diffuser.

We tested this product for the very first time this year and with its elegant design, incredible features, and consistent performance, it made its way to the second position on our list. The portable oil diffuser has a capacity of 150 ml which makes the aroma last for up to 8 hours depending which setting you choose. The machine lets you cycle through the gamut of 7 colors with 2 brightness modes for each, letting you create a romantic ambiance to set your mood right.

If you wish to use it both as an oil diffuser and a humidifier, simply add water in the diffuser bowl with a few drops of essential oil and relax! It uses a powerful and super-silent ultrasonic motor that only lets you hear a light humming sound when the machine is on.

We found a Pin sensor upon detaching the body which doubles as a water level indicator. The only minor fault we found in the device was the placement of the mode buttons. We would have really appreciated if they were placed at the front instead of the back for easy access.

What we liked

  • 7 LED lights with 2 brightness modes for each.
  • Auto-shut off feature.
  • 150 ml capacity.
  • Beautiful wood grain finish.
  • 2 mist modes.

What we didn't like

  • The mode buttons are located at the back.

Our third pick has maintained its position at spot #3 from the last two years on our list. We tested this model in a medium-size apartment and an office, respectively, in Vancouver. The 1.5 liter capacity of the tank proved to be sufficient for an entire night. Its auto-shutoff feature will automatically turn the device off when the water level is alarmingly low in order to prevent overheating.

At night, at first, kept the high mist setting for about 3 hours and switched to low settings for the rest of the night. The hygrometer we used showed the humidity range stable between 43-45% which is ideal for people with a sore throat, congestion, and hacking cough problems.

There’s only one button dedicated for all the functions which our testers found slightly off putting. However, the low water level indicator and breezy cleanup of the water tank made up for it.

What we liked

  • 1.5-liter tank capacity.
  • Portable design.
  • Simple clean up.
  • Dual mist settings.
  • Soft night glow.

What we didn't like

  • One-touch operation can be inconvenient for some.

This Honeywell HUL535BC model has been one of our favorites since 2015. It is best suited for spacious bedrooms, living rooms, and offices. Thanks to the huge tank size, you can go without refilling the tank for up to 24 hours. Once turned on, it takes roughly 20 minutes to get the indoor moisture level hovering around 45-55% which eliminates flu viruses.

If your kid is a light sleeper, this is the perfect device for his/her room as the noise it makes during operation is barely audible. In order to get rid of the white dust problem, we used distilled water instead of tap water and so should you. About the cleanup, it might feel a bit tedious at the beginning for the uninitiated. We suggest using a combination of regular household vinegar and clean water to clear off the tank at least once a week.

What we liked

  • Quiet.
  • Easy controls.
  • 3.8-liter tank capacity.
  • Soothing ambient light.
  • Can raise the humidity level up to 55%.

What we didn't like

  • Produces white dust if refilled with tap-water.

This is a whole-house humidifier which can easily fill rooms up to 300 sq.ft with cool, sedating mist in an instant. With a tank this large, you can doze off peacefully through the entire night without having to refill the tank. Our staffs who tested this product found the nightlight too light.

Thankfully, it gives you the option to turn it off. It also gets brownie points for including digital relative humidity readout, although, getting a separate hygrometer would be a wiser move. We found a cleaning brush located at the base for cleaning purpose. Talking about cleaning, as long as you use distilled water, you only have to clean the tank once in every two weeks.

What we liked

  • Bright nightlight that can be turned off.
  • 3 L tank capacity.
  • 360-degree mist nozzles.
  • Cleaning brush the base.
  • Amazing mist output.

What we didn't like

  • Only suitable for small rooms.

The Honeywell QuietCare can comfortably bump up the indoor moisture to a safe level in rooms measuring up to 200 sq.ft. While the capacity doesn’t make it the best humidifier in this competitive market, you can the full value of the money you have to spend on it. We absolutely loved how easy it is to remove the blue tank. Just pull it out, refill and re-attach.

We used both tap-water and distilled water for the test and found the device leaving white dust residue on the furniture when refilled with regular water. In a dry province like Ontario, the mist output will last for about 8-9 hours at the highest setting which is fine for overnight use. At the lowest settings, however, it can last for up to two nights. Soak the filter in vinegar at least once a week to wash the mineral deposit and you are good to go.

What we liked

  • Quiet and highly efficient.
  • Auto shut-off.
  • Simple controls.
  • Easy to refill the tank.
  • Hassle-free maintenance.

What we didn't like

  • Not ideal for extremely dry places.

TaoTronics Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier is one of our top picks not only for its sheer tank size and bold looks. It has the dual mist option which means it can release both warm and cool mist depending on the weather and your comfort. We gave extra points for the built-in filter which removes allergens, flu virus and bacteria to ensure the air you breathe is fresh and pure.

Those with dry cough, headache or asthma problem would be highly benefitted by the oil diffuser built in the machine. Put a few drops of your preferred essential oil and enjoy a peaceful sleep. Like the best ultrasonic humidifiers, this one too produces only a low humming sound when switched on. Coming to the LED display, do keep in mind that it only shows the ambient temp, not the temp of the mist. It also displays the percentage of moisture in the air.

You will find the mist setting buttons and power button right at the bottom of the display. Its smart sensor will automatically stop diffusing mist when the air reaches the desired level of humidity.

What we liked

  • 6L tank capacity.
  • Dual mist output.
  • Easy digital controls.
  • Oil diffuser.
  • Built-in filter.

What we didn't like

  • The built-in hygrometer isn’t always accurate.

The Honeywell QuietCare comes with a whopping 9-gallon capacity which makes it very well suited for an area over 1900 sq.ft. The tank can accommodate enough fuel for an entire day. The biggest highlight of this model is undoubtedly the dual tank system. Each tank holds 4.5 gallons and when one tank is empty, the other can take its place. This also means you don’t have to switch off the entire system while refilling the unit.

Coming to the look and feel, a lot of thought went to the design of this machine. It not only feels solid but also goes quite well with the furniture of the room. Thanks to the auto-shutoff feature, the system behaves according to the level of water remaining in the tank.

Our experts loved the noise-free operation and simple maintenance. Twice a week, flip the built-in filter to prevent mineral deposit. Add to that, both parts of the tank are quickly detachable which allows an easy access to the base for cleaning purpose.

What we liked

  • Contemporary design.
  • Massive 9-gallon capacity.
  • Dual tank.
  • Every major part can be cleaned individually.
  • Highly portable.

What we didn't like

  • The filter needs to be replaced in every 3 months.

9. Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier - Best Overall, Runners-up

This gorgeous drop-shaped humidifier capacitated for rooms up to 250 sq.ft is more than just an eye-candy. It is one of the most energy-saving units we have come across and it doesn’t even require filter replacement. Thus, with this tool, you save both money and energy at the same time. The variable controls are very easy to get used to and the 360-degree nozzles let you disperse the soothing mist in any direction you please.

What also makes this machine a notch above the rest is the color options it comes in. You have 8 color options to choose from. We picked the Aqua one for the evaluation and loved every bit of it barring just one aspect. Although the motor doesn’t create any grunting noise itself, the bubbling sound of the water may pose a problem for light sleepers.

What we liked

  • Stylish and compact design.
  • 8 color options.
  • Variable control settings.
  • Doesn’t need a filter.
  • Auto shut-off.

What we didn't like

  • The sound of bubbling water

Here comes another TaoTronics model that won our hearts with its unyielding performance, low-key design, and chore-free maintenance. In fact, out of all the models we tested this year, this one was by far the easiest to clean. Even at the highest mist setting, the tank will stay refilled for up to 10 hours. Our tester who used it in his condo for over 2 years reported that his nosebleed and dry coughing stopped after using this humidifier.

At the highest setting, the unit releases cool vapor with an incredible force which, in turn, moisturizes the whole room in just about 15 minutes. It has no LED screen but that doesn’t affect the usability even a tiny bit. The LED nightlight in the system is not too bright which is a plus, considering most people love soft, dim lights while sleeping.

What we liked

  • Designed for rooms over 250 square feet.
  • Strong mist output at the highest setting.
  • Auto shut-off.
  • Whisper-quiet.
  • Extremely easy to clean.

What we didn't like

  • Fails to disperse sufficient steam in extremely cold and dry weather.

Final Verdict

These are our top picks for the best humidifier of 2019. While many models which impressed us in the past years failed to survive the stiff competition, there were also a few surprise entries. We make sure to put each and every model through a bunch of tests to help you buy the right product. Reading the reviews is only half the job done. Compare and contrast the functions, pros, and cons of multiple products side by side before zeroing in on one product. That’s all for this segment.
