Best Air Purifier in Canada – Top 10 Hottest List for May. 2020

Shares

I am a proud Montréalité who loves everything about this place, the people, the food, the pubs, save for just one thing, the atrocious air pollution. About 7 years ago from now, my allergies had hit the rockier bottom of the rock bottom. The meds were only giving me temporary relief. So I decided to do something about the ridiculous air quality which showed no signs of improving anytime soon. I got myself an air purifier.

I’m sure I’m not the only Canuck who is pissed off with the increasing level of air pollution. Since the internet helped me find the right purifier without leaving a black hole in my wallet, I think it’s payback time.

I love machines and am super picky when it comes to choosing gadgets. From scouring various relevant forums in search of authentic information to dissecting core specifications, be assured that I’ve left no stone unturned. After 12 cups of coffee and two sleepless nights. I have finally zeroed in on 10 air purifiers that are substantially better than their competitors in almost every aspect.

Below I have ranked and reviewed the 10 best air purifiers in Canada in 2020 that will hopefully cut your work in half:

Best Air Purifier Comparison:

10 Best Air Purifiers for 2020

Best air purifiers over dozens of competitive models from different brands listed below:

1. Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier - (Highly Rated, Well-Priced Product - Best of the Best)

I initially planned not to disclose the name of the purifier I have got success with to maintain cold objectivity. But heck ya! LEVOIT is “the one” for me. Like all great air purifiers, this baby is equipped with a three-stage filtration system which includes a pre-filter followed by a solid HEPA filter topped off with an activated carbon filter.

From large dirt particles to heavy smoke, microscopic allergens, pathogens, dust mites, and mould, nothing escapes the bullet-proof (not literally) filtration system of this air purifier. I don’t have a pet in my house but if you have a furry friend in the house, you would appreciate the unit’s ability to capture pet hair and dander that could potentially trigger nasty allergic reactions and be lethal for asthmatic people.

I live in a small condo and this machine is actually rated for up to 80 square feet rooms, so I have never had any issue with its purifying efficiency. It comes with three settings. Level 3 is a little loud for my liking but I can live with that. I have seen a lot of people bickering about overly bright backlit buttons that feel too much even when the built-in night lights are turned off.

I think all those people didn’t fully go through the instruction manual that clearly mentions how to disable the control button backlight. On top of it, the replacement filters are sensibly priced and are easy to swap, even without the help of the manual.

What we liked

  • Gets rid of almost all kinds of allergens, mould, smoke, and stench in a heartbeat.
  • Soothing night light.
  • Affordable filter replacement.
  • The manual clearly mentions how to turn off the overly bright backlight of the buttons.
  • Easy to setup and control.

What we didn't like

  • Not adequate for rooms over 80-100 sq. feet.
  • Can be a little loud on max fan speed setting.

If I weren’t a penny pincher and had a bigger room to work with, I’d have gone with this model. Why? It is simply the most technically-capable purifier in this price range that kills a host of harmful airborne germs and viruses using UV-C light.

If you have kids or elders in the house who are extremely susceptible to viral infections right now, this model is armed with pretty much everything to keep them safe and healthy throughout the year. Like the previous unit, this one also traps micro-fine as well as large dust particles, smoke, mould, pollen, and bad odor like a champ.

I loved the sleek and space-saving design of the unit. The purifier gets the job done without making any noise, making it anyone who has trouble falling asleep. The cost of running is also quite reasonable for a purifier as powerful as this. On the highest setting with UV sterilization feature on, it consumes around 58 watts which is much lower compared to the majority of its direct competitors.

What we liked

  • Not only purifiers but also cools down the room to some extent if used on the highest setting.
  • Nukes a bunch of harmful germs and viruses using UV sterilization technology.
  • Quiet as a cat.
  • Effectively scrubs tobacco smoke and pet dander off the air.
  • Although rated for 167 sq.ft rooms, the efficiency remains the same in rooms almost twice its advertised range.

What we didn't like

  • Cannot be used in winter as it tends to cool down the air as well.
  • Keeping the UV light on in a dark room can be annoying, especially if you need complete darkness to doze off. I guess putting a sticker or tape on the light can.

If I had an even bigger room, such as a 400 square feet master bedroom or a 500 sq.ft spacious living room to deal with, I would have definitely gone with this one. Just like the previous model, this model also works like a dust-magnet on rooms almost two times its advertised range. Which is 217 sq.ft, by the way.

Its premium quality toxin absorber filter is truly a life-saver for people suffocating from tobacco smoke, sneezing to death with red eyes, and chest tightness due to dust allergies. The multi-stage filtration system does a spectacular job of eliminating mould, pet dander, pollen, and toxic fumes from the indoor air as well.

Turning the speed all the way up can dramatically improve the air quality under 30 minutes. Considering the feature and benefits it offers, it’s astonishing how LEVOIT has kept the price so competitive.

What we liked

  • The powerful filters effectively capture allergens, dust, toxic chemicals, and odors.
    Ozone-free.
  • Ideal for people suffering from respiratory problems and severe allergy.
  • Has a built-in timer.
  • Although rated for 217 sq.ft rooms, works just fine in rooms up to 500 sq.ft.

What we didn't like

  • Not the quietest air purifier on this list.

Here’s another very capable air filter available in Canada for individuals struggling with severe asthma, allergic reactions, and flu symptoms. Its advanced HEPA filter integrated in the unit is designed to capture airborne allergens and pathogens as small as .03 microns, making it ideal for urban areas cursed with high pollution rates.

The three-stage filtration system is also quite good at relieving the air of tobacco smoke, pet fur, dander, dust particles, and pollen. However, if you want something specifically to combat mould and mildew growth, there are better options out there.

Having said that, the majority of its existing consumers have shared rave reviews about its ability to get rid of that typical musty smell caused by high humidity. Bonus is the built-in ionizer that releases negative ions that electrically charge the air molecules to remove harmful microbes and particles from the air.

Also, not that it matters much but I got to say it’s one of the most aesthetically-pleasing air purifiers I have ever seen. One brownie point for that too.

What we liked

  • Has a built-in ionizer to eliminate harmful microbes and toxic fumes.
  • Built-in quality indicator.
  • True HEPA filter traps particles as fine as .03 microns.
  • Ideal for people suffering from serious breathing problem and allergic reactions.
  • Lightweight, and attractive design.

What we didn't like

  • A bit too loud at max speed, however, acceptably silent in low and medium speed settings.

5. Levoit LV-PUR131 Air Purifier - (Best Overall)

This is the third LEVOIT product to grace my list of the best air purifiers in Canada, so it’s natural for you to assume that I’m biased towards this brand. That’s not it. My loyalty lies in value for money. That’s where LEVOIT purifiers outshine many of its more sophisticated and expensive competitors by a huge margin.

Model LV-PUR131 sports HEPA H13 filter which is one of the most powerful air filters you can get your hands on. Theoretically, it can remove up to 99.97% airborne gunk including many seriously harmful viruses and bacteria species.

If you have kids and pets in the house and dust makes your eyes crusty, nose runny, and throat itchy, you can definitely give this purifier a shot. This energy-star certified, set-it-and-forget-it model comes with smart sensors that adjust the fan speed on its own to ensure optimal comfort and peaceful slumber.

Its auto-sensing filter lifespan indicator tells you when its time to replace the filters, taking the guesswork out of the equation.

What we liked

  • Excellent air scrubbing quality, thanks to the HEPA H13 filter.
  • Highly suitable for asthma patients and people with severe pet allergies.
  • Has filter replacement indicator light.
  • Smart sensors automatically fine-tune the fan speed.
  • 1-12 hour timer helps to minimize unnecessary energy consumption.
  • Working range easily extends up to 700 square feet open space.

What we didn't like

  • Replacement filters are a bit expensive.

Best suited for small apartments, condos, libraries and office rooms, this compact and classy air purifier uses UV-C light to nuke a host of airborne pathogens. From musty odor to dusty floors causing crusty eyes and breathing problems, the HEPA filter, in conjunction with UV-C sterilizer will get you rid of almost every airborne illness one can think of.

I mean sure, it can’t kill novel coronavirus, if that’s what you’re expecting, but influenza virus, pet danders, and mould? Hecking yes!

At the highest setting, it’s just as loud as a regular fan, so loudness should be the least of your worries. The built-in soft nightlight and sleep mode could guarantee a peaceful slumber. I loved the inclusion of the timer function which relieves you of the duty to turn off the machine once it meets the target air quality goal.

What we liked

  • Great for small spaces.
  • Uses UV-C sterilizer to kill a bunch of pathogens.
  • Effectively removes large volumes of dust, tobacco smoke, and pet danders from small spaces.
  • Quiet operation.
  • Replacement filters are easily affordable and fit like a glove without much effort.

What we didn't like

  • Won’t work as advertised unless kept in a very small room.

This little bad boy here is perfect for medium size bedrooms, living rooms, office, and small babies’ rooms. It utilizes a true HEPA filter along with a mighty UVC light that traps a truckload of dust, mould, pollen, pet hair, and what not!

Its fans provide a terrific air circulation, making it ideal for the famous Canadian winter when you have to keep all the windows and doors closed. Low to medium speed settings will make the stuffiness go away and make the indoor air smelling as fresh as an English garden.

The UVC light kills millions of malignant viruses, bacteria, and microbes responsible for worsening asthma and allergic reactions. It includes a programmable timer and a super-quiet sleep mode to take care of your room’s air quality on its own when you don’t feel like messing around with the settings.

What we liked

  • 5-speed settings combined with amazing air circulation cuts the stuffiness that builds up during winter when you have to keep all the windows shut.
  • Amazingly effective 4-layers filtration system captures a huge amount of dust and mould spores.
  • Ozone-free.
  • UV-C light terminates flu viruses as well as several other dangerous pathogens commonly found in urban areas.
  • Works pretty well in up to 600 square feet spaces.

What we didn't like

  • The air vents are placed at the back of the unit. Hence, it’s mandatory to keep the unit a few inches away from the walls to make it work properly.
  • Can be quite loud in the 4th and 5th speed settings.

8. Honeywell HPA300C True HEPA Air Purifier - (Recommended for you)

This list would lose its credibility without the mention of this little gem from the house of HONEYWELL. This energy-star certified basic-looking model is frequently recommended by doctors to asthma patients. Why? Because when it comes to quality, performance, and durability, Honeywell HEPA is miles ahead of those cheap, not-so-True HEPA filters you find in regular, low-budget models.

The filtration system can capture and vent out PM0.3 micron contaminants to maintain peak indoor air quality. If it can trap .3 micron pathogens, then it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how effective it will be at eliminating dust, mould spores, pollen, tobacco and cooking smell from confined spaces.

What we liked

  • Can instantly capture a huge amount of dust.
  • Usable in up to 500 sq.ft master bedrooms and living spaces.
  • Great for removing cigarette smoke, cooking odor, and musty smell that usually grows stronger in high humidity.
  • Almost inaudible on lowest speed setting.

What we didn't like

  • A bit noisy at max fan speed setting.

In addition to all the mainstream features of a quality air purifier we talked about so far, Winix uses Plasmawave technology to sweep away bad odor from cigarettes, cooking, wildfire, and several species of viruses, germs, and microbes that can make you very very sick. The True HEPA filter removes up to 99.97% allergens such as pander dander, pollens, mould spores.

The quality of the carbon filter in this unit is of the highest quality. It employs Advanced Odor Control technology to remove big stinks and microscopic pathogens probably clinging to that air you are breathing right now.

The unit is equipped with air quality sensors which are rather too sensitive for my liking but this doesn’t come in the way of its efficiency, so I can get past that. Bonus are the sleep mode and auto mode which allows you to doze off peacefully without having to tinker with the settings.

What we liked

  • Works most effectively in a small radius, up to 200 sq.ft (even though it’s rated for 360 sq.ft).
  • Quiet as a cat yet adequately powerful on level 1 and 2-speed settings.
  • Cleans dust mites, pollen, mould spores, pet dander, and a bunch of pathogens with 3-stage filter and Plasmawave technology.
  • Smart sensors help you keep track of the air quality with three LED light indicators.

What we didn't like

  • Noisy on the 3rd and 4th speed setting.
  • The orange LED air quality indicator often gives false alarms. However, the red LED doesn’t turn on unless the air quality drops to seriously hazardous levels.

10. Mountain Peak- 10000s Commercial Ozone Air Purifier - (Most Technically-sound Model)

More photo & price on Amazon.ca

Wrapping up my list of the best air purifiers in Canada with this industrial-grade purifier that works well in 500-1000 square feet basements, RVs, laundry rooms, kennel buildings, garages, and even inside a car. It uses ozone plates which act as a shield against dangerous bacteria, germs, and viruses that are likely to worsen asthma problem and flu symptoms.

Since this unit uses ozone to kill germs and purify the air, it’s vital to keep the room well-aerated before turning on the machine as inhaling ozone is not going to go down well with your body. You’ll also need to make sure not to walk into the room while the device is on.

Having said that, the beauty of this unit lies in its speed and efficiency. It can remove the heaviest odors and toxic fumes in 3-5 hours without drawing a ridiculous amount of wattage. Just turn on the fan at max speed for a few hours to eliminate the ozone and once that’s done, enjoy the fresh smell and clean air. Your lungs will thank you for it.

What we liked

  • One of the most powerful units for eliminating toxic fumes and strong odours from basements, commercial buildings, garages, and so on.
  • Simple and streamlined controls.
  • Drastically improves air quality after running for 5-24 hours, depending on the existing pollution level.

What we didn't like

  • You need to aerate the room for at least 30 minutes after turning off the device to completely get rid of the ozone smell.
  • You can’t just walk into the operating radius while the machine is on.

Final Verdict

So that was my take on the best air purifiers in Canada that definitely deserves your attention if you’re desperately in search of one. Phew! The task wasn’t easy. I got to say studying thermodynamic sterilization in college came in quite handy here. Here’s one thing I need to be honest about before you pick up a product and go to town on it.

Air purifiers are complex systems and very few of them actually do what they are supposed to do. If you are on a tight budget and wondering if an off-brand cheap model will get the job done, sorry to disappoint you, mate. It most likely won’t. In order to pull the polluted air through layers of filters and circulate purified air back into the room, the internal components have to be of the highest quality.

So if you care to listen to my advice, I’d say save up some more and invest in an ergonomically-sound model from a reputed manufacturer. The initial high investment might sting a little but it will save you a lot of money and headache in the long run. Take this from someone who has dealt with three useless low-cost air purifiers before finally bumping into one that’s been running for 3 years now without any hiccups.
